I have been using CamelBak hydration packs for about 15
years. Their products keep getting
better. CamelBak started in 1989 when Michael
Eidson, who was an EMT by trade, took an IV bag filled with water and stuffed
it in a tube sock. Michael then put the
contraption in his bike jersey pocket, put the hose over his shoulder and
clamped it with a clothespin. He wanted
to have extra water during the “Hotter’N Hell 100.” That was the first CamelBak.
CamelBak
feels strongly about “Giving Bak.” They started a program called We Know
Water. It is designed to teach 4th
and 5th graders the benefits of using a reusable bottle. CamelBak
also believes in being environmentally responsible in their day to day
operations. The CamelBak headquarters is located in
Petaluma, California.
Here is a video that talks about the Podium Ice Bottle.
The Podium Ice features
aerogel insulation that keeps your water cold four times longer than
traditional bottles. It will also keep beverages warm if that is your
thing. It holds 21 ounces of water and
has a TruTaste polypropylene coating with Hydroguard that lets you taste your
water and not what was in your bottle last time (i.e. leftover electrolyte
drink).
The cap has a self-sealing Jet Valve
that eliminates spills and has a wider opening for more water flow than
previous models. You can lockout the cap
with a simple twist and the nipple part of the cap comes off easy so you can
clean it.
The bottle itself has a wide mouth for
easy filling, especially when adding ice.
The Podium
Ice is 100% free of BPA and BPS so you don’t have to worry about that either.
I have been using the Podium Chill
for years, which is one of CamelBak’s
insulated bottles that claims to keep water cold two times longer than a regular
bottle. It would keep my ice water cold
for about 20-30 minutes as opposed to a regular bottle that would last about
10-15 minutes. Those times were when I
would ride in 85-90 degree temperatures.
I tested the Podium
Ice and the ice water lasted an hour and there was still ice left in
it. It was 80 degrees out that day.
I also did a comparison in my
house. I filled a Podium
(un-insulated bottle) - green bottle, Podium Chill
–black cap, and Podium Ice Bottle – white cap with ice water.
It was about 72 degrees in my house.
The ice in the Podium
Bottle melted after three hours. The
ice in the Poduim
Chill lasted five hours. The ice in
the Podium Ice
lasted eight hours. The results were not
surprising to me.
Pros
Keeps fluids cold or hot 4 times longer
Jet Valve reduces spills
Larger opening for easy filling
Lockout valve
