ACV Cramp Cure Review

Many runners experience muscle cramps at one point or another.  It can be during a hard workout, sprints, or even on a day when you aren’t running as hard as normal, but your body just cramps up.  What causes muscle cramps?

For years, runners were under the impression that muscle cramps were caused by a vitamin deficiency, dehydration, or fatigue.  Many people take salt pills, electrolytes, or eat bananas to try and keep dreadful leg cramps away.  New research is pointing toward another reason for why you get muscle cramps and how to treat them.

“The Real Cause of Muscle Cramps.” By Dr. Bob Murray discusses that when you decide to move your legs, your brain sends signals to nerve cells in your spinal cord, which connects to your muscles.  The stimulated muscles contract and that is what makes you move.  Basically, Dr. Murray says that the issue is not with your muscles but your nerves.  Research has shown that you can activate sensory fibers in your mouth and throat to send signals to the nervous system.  This will in turn tell your muscles to relax.  That is where ACV Cramp Cure comes in.

ACV Cramp Cure claims that their drink can typically relieve cramping within 60-seconds.  That is a very bold statement right?  While I did not have a full blown muscle cramp, I did test this twice when my legs were starting to tighten up.  I also had my running partner test out ACV during our marathon on Sunday.  We both felt almost an immediate relief of our leg tightness.

ACV Cramp Cure is made up of Purified Water, Apple Cider Vinegar, Sugar, Natural flavoring, Stevia, Lime Juice, and capsicum.  It is 100% all natural.  I will warn you that it does have a bit of a bite, so be ready for it.

Pros:
Convenient small package (easy to take with you)
Decent price
Caffeine free
Gluten Free
No GMO’s
Works in less than a minute

2XU 24/7 Recovery Sock Review

2XU was founded in 2005 out of Melbourne, Australia.  2XU stands for “Two Times You” which symbolizes the multiplication of human performance.  They offer an extensive line of sports clothing for people out on the road, in the water, on the snow, or in the gym.  They offer compression gear, socks, hats, wetsuits, and much more.  2XU’s gear has been worn by some of the best athletes in the world.

I have tested the 2XU GHST tech tee and it is my favorite shirt.  You can see my review by clicking here.  After a long run or a hard workout, it is important to recovery quickly so you can get back out there for your next workout.  That is where I really enjoyed the 2XU 24/7 recovery sock.  The 24/7 sock is made with graduated compression and a mixture of cotton and Coolmax yarns for all day comfort.  The Coolmax yarns help wick away moisture.  One of the reasons why the 24/7 sock is so comfortable is that you get extra padding under the ball of your foot and heel.  That way, if you have to stand all day or walk a lot after a hard workout, your feet are protected more than many of the recovery socks out there that are too thin, in my opinion.

The true benefit of wearing compression socks is that it improves circulation that can cause swelling and fatigue.  Not only are these good for recovering after a run, but they are ideal for times when you have to sit or stand for extended amounts of time.  These are typically times when you have a decrease in circulation.

Pros:
All day comfort
Extra cushion under ball of foot and heel
Graduated Compression

Cons:
A tad bit pricey at $44.95 (but the benefits are priceless)

I have been told by several long time runners that it is way more important to recover smart than train harder.  If you train really hard and don’t allow adequate time to recovery, many of your gains will be wasted.  The 2XU 24/7 sock is a great product that can aid in your recovery.  By having a solid recovery plan that includes stretching, foam rolling, and wearing compression gear, you will be breaking PR’s before you know it.  You can purchase your 24/7 recovery socks at the 2XU website, Amazon, or at your local retailer (click here forlocations).

Sport Suds Review

If you are a new runner or have been around the block a few times, you probably know that running brings out some smells that you never thought would come out of your body.  I have been cycling and working out at the gym for over a decade and my clothes have never smelled like they do after a run.  My wife and I call it the homeless smell.

The smell doesn’t actually come from the sweat itself but from the bacterium that breaks down the sweat (a process called bromhidrosis).  Performance or technical running gear is made to wick moisture and dry quickly, but those same properties trap the oils and bacteria that smell so bad.  Cotton tends to not trap those oils as easily, but is terrible at moisture wicking and breathability.

I used to just wash my running gear with my normal laundry.  The problem is that most detergents don’t remove the oils and bacteria that care causing the smells.  These oils reduce the effectiveness of your expensive running clothes.

Sport Suds is a high-performance cleaning product that is made to bring your running gear back from the dead, or keep them looking and smelling new.  All Sport Suds products are sustainably sourced from natural reoccurring sources.  Not only that, but they are also readily biodegradable, non-toxic, and are septic and grew water safe.  Most laundry detergents cannot make that claim.  Because of the care put into their products, Sport Suds is hypo-allergenic, fragrance free, and is never tested on animals.

Sport Suds is based in the town of Milton in Ontario, Canada.  Their sport detergent is manufactured in both the US and Canada.  Sport Suds stocks their detergent in warehouses in both the US and Canada so you can get your products quickly.

So, SportSuds sounds good on paper, but how does it hold up to my real world testing?  With my marathon training in full effect, my clothes have been downright unbearable.  I couldn’t stand to smell my clothes, which meant that Sport Suds was going to be put to the ultimate test.  I used Sport Suds Washing Machine Cleaner first to make sure my machine was clean (more on that in a second).  Then I ran my first load of clothes using Sport Suds.  My clothes came out with no odor and they looked cleaner than they have in months.  I was thoroughly impressed.  These results were replicated load after load.

You will want to follow the instructions in the Sport Suds website before washing your clothes in Sport Suds.  If you have been using regular detergents, they can leave behind a residue, which Sport Suds will remove from your washing machine drum.  You don’t want that residue to end up on your cloths though.  Click here for instructions on how to use Sport Suds for the first time.  You can either run a few cycles with your Sport Suds detergent and old towels or use Sport Suds Washing Machine Cleaner.

Pros:
Environmentally friendly
Inexpensive (starting around $20)
Cleans difficult stains and removes odors with ease
Septic and grey water safe
Fast shipping

Cons:
You can’t throw your old clothes away from being too smelly so you can get a new ones

Sport Suds Social Media Links

I wash all of my clothes with Sport Suds now and can’t believe that I can get a 140 load tub for $59.95.  That will last me over 2.5 years if I only used it for my running clothes or over a year if I wash all of my family’s laundry with it.  You can’t beat that deal.  There are several sizes to choose from and there are packages that comes with detergent (40 loads) and washing machine cleaner (5 pack) for $31.90 on the Sport Suds website.   Sport Suds is the best sport detergent that I have tested.  You can get yours at the Sport Suds Website or at Amazon. I felt like it left my clothes cleaner, smelling fresher, and you get a great value.  I wasn’t disappointed and you won’t be either.

Swiftwick Pursuit and Vibe Socks Review

I have been running in Swiftwick socks since April of this year.  Swiftwick claims, “We make the best socks you will ever wear…GUARANTEED!”  I thought to myself, that is a very bold statement.  After testing out the Aspire socks, I was a believer in what Swiftwick was claiming. (Click here for my past review of the Aspire)

I received a pair of the Pursuit One and Pursuit Five.  The number references the height of the sock.  I also received a pair of the Vibe One.  The sizes range from a Zero, which is below the ankle to a Twelve, which is over the calf.

The Pursuit is made out of Merino wool.  I don’t know what I like the most about Merino wool, but I can’t get enough of products made with that magical material.  It wicks really well, doesn’t trap in odors, and is extremely comfortable.

The Vibe is a great sock.  It has a thicker foot bed than the Aspire and is really comfortable.  It feels great and has wonderful moisture wicking.

Pros:
Very comfortable
Hot spot and blister free
Extremely durable
Made in the USA
Best guarantee in the business

Cons:
A tad pricey starting at $12.99 for the Vibe and $15.99 for the Pursuit

I am a believer in Swiftwick socks, without a doubt.  While they might be a little pricey, they are extremely durable and will last for quite a while (longer than cheaper socks).  They are made in the USA and use the best materials and technologies available to create a superior product.  It is worth spending a few extra dollars to get such a great product.

Give them a try and let me know what you think.  What do you have to lose?  If you don’t like them, Swiftwick will buy you a pair of your favorite socks as a replacement.  You can buy them starting at $12.99 for the Vibe and $15.99 for the Pursuit.  They also have various other sizes and several colors to choose from.  Go to Swiftwick or Amazon to get yours today.

Oofos Ooriginal Recovery Sandal Review

Many people know, recovery is as important as your training runs.  If you don’t allow yourself to recovery properly, you increase your risk of injury.  Run training builds off your previous runs and recovery.  When you don’t properly recover, your body is building off of stressed muscles, which is when the injury can happen.  There are a few things that I have implemented into my recovery plan that might help you too.

I started stretching every night.  My wife and I sit down to watch tv.  I lay on the ground and stretch for about 10-15 minutes.  I like the OPTP Stretch Out Strap.  I have been focusing mostly on my hamstrings and IT Band, because those are the areas that I need it the most.  The other thing that I have implemented is the use of a recovery sandal.  I have tried a few different brands, but there is one that is my favorite by far.

Walking in my Oofos Ooriginal recovery sandal is like walking on clouds.  I use them whenever I am home, even if I didn’t run that day.  They are the most comfortable sandals that I have ever put on, by far.  The Ooriginal comes in 4 colors for men and 11 colors for women.

Most foams that are used in running shoes are made to propel you forward.  The foam used in Oofos is designed to absorb the shock.  This in turn reduces the impact on your back, knees and feet.  This allows you to recover faster.  The one thing that took a little while to get used to was that the arch really comes up into your foot.  This is designed to cradle your arch and take the stress off of your joints.  After about 30 minutes, it felt natural.   It is also designed to flex with your foot, which allows you to walk with a more natural gait.

Oofos are not only awesome because they feel great and let you recover more quickly, but they provide other benefits as well.  They have a closed cell foam, which keeps bacteria and moisture out of your sandals.  You can use these in the shower or even throw them in the washing machine when they need a good cleaning.  The foam is durable and will last the life of the sandal without breaking down as well.

Pros:
Most comfortable sandal I have ever tried
Great arch support
Many colors and styles to suit your fashion needs
Easy to clean
Foam will not break down over time

Cons:
More expensive than many sandals ($32.96-44.95 depending on where you buy them)

I am in love with my Oofos recovery sandals and I have no doubt that you will be too.  From the cushion to the arch support, this is the perfect items to add to your running gear stash.  It has made a huge difference in relieving my tired feet and legs after my long runs.   You should definitely give them a try.  You can buy them at the Oofos website, at Amazon, or at your local retailer (Click here to find a retailer near you).

XX2i Optics USA 1 Review

XX2i is committed to producing the best possible eyewear for outdoor enthusiasts and stand behind each product they produce with integrity and pride.  They want to insure that you are completely satisfied, no matter what.   XX2i sunglasses are not available in stores from what I could find, but they offer the best warranty that I have seen, anywhere.  You can try them for 365 days and if you don’t like them, you can return them and get your money back.  Also, they have a “no questions asked” lifetime warranty, even if you scratch or break the glasses.

I was very pleased with the France 2 sunglasses when I reviewed them on my blog in June (click here for the review).  They were a great pair of shades for a great price.  I got an email from the rep at XX2i about testing out the USA1 and was excited to test them out as well.

Again, the USA 1 sunglasses start at $59.99, but you could choose to purchase sets with additional lenses for $99.99.  They showed up with a hard case, soft microfiber bag, and a sunglass cord.  The hard case had spots for the sunglasses and separate spots for the lenses as well.  It is the same case setup that came with the France 2, which is one of the best cases that I have received to date.

They wanted to send me the Crystal Clear sunglasses with green temple tips and the Flash Green lenses.  While some people (including my wife) might not care for the color scheme, I really liked it.  If that color scheme doesn’t work for you, they have other colors to choose from.  The USA 1 has anti-fog cutouts, which the France 2 did not have.

XX2i Optics calls their lenses 4k ultra high definition, a marketing term that refers to Advanced Chromatic Filtering, High Scratch Resistance, Impact Resilience, and Lifetime Warranty.  The lenses were great; clear and did not distort anything.  You can get polarized lenses as well.

Pros:
Very light weight material
Great Value (Starting at $59.99)
Great fit, doesn’t move around or bounce while running
Unbeatable warranty

Cons:
Not available in stores

The France 2 sunglasses fit really well, but the USA 1 fit even better.  These are a premium sunglass without the premium price.  They only cost $59.99, fit great, and have the best warranty in the business.  It doesn’t get any better than that.  Grab a pair today!

Adventure Medical Kits Review

I am a strong believer in being prepared for anything.  When I go on trail runs, I like to have my hydration pack stocked with matches, a knife, bandages for sprains, and some extra snacks.  You never know if something will happen to you or you will come across someone who needs to be rescued.  My favorite place to trail run has no cell reception either, so being prepared is important.

I came across Adventure Medical Kits, which is a subsidiary of the Tender Corporation.  Tender was founded in 1973 in New Hampshire.  They own several companies that make first aid kits and other remedy products like bug bite and burn products.  Adventure Medical Kits makes great products.  They have everything from large kits that you would take on long backpacking trips to smaller packs like the one that I reviewed, that is good for 1-2 day trips.

This is a great kit for trail running or hiking.  It comes in a silnylon bag with a DryFlex waterproof bag inside of it.  That way none of your supplies get wet.   It comes with everything you would need for minor medical issues.  Here is a list of what comes in this tiny bag that measures 5.5”x11”x1” and weighs a mere 3.68 ounces.

Bandages & Dressings
2 - Bandage, Butterfly Closure
1 - Tape, ½” x 10 yards
3 - Easy Access Bandages, Adhesive Fabric, Knuckle
5 - Easy Access Bandages, Adhesive Fabric, 1” x 3”
1 - Bandage, Conforming Gauze, Non-Sterile, 2”
2 - Dressing Gauze, Sterile 3” x 3”, Pkg/2
2 - Dressing Gauze, Sterile 2” x 2”, Pkg/2
1 - Dressing, Non-Adherent, Sterile, 3” x 4”

Cleaning and Topicals
6 - Antiseptic Towelette
3 - Triple Antibiotic Ointment, 1/32 ounce
1 – Skin Tac Adhesive Wipe

Medication
2 - Ibuprofen (200 mg), 2 pk.
2 - Aspirin (325 mg), 2 pk.
2 - Antihistamine (Diphenhydramine 25mg.)
2 - After Bite Sting and Itch Relief Wipe
2 - Acetaminophen (500 mg), 2 pk.

Blister
11 - Moleskin, Pre-Cut and Shaped
2 - Alcohol Swab

Instruments
1 - Splinter Picker/Tick Remover Forceps
3 - Safety Pins

Yes, that is all included and fits in this tiny package.  I have to say that it is amazing that you can get all of this for $17.00 and it easily fits in my hydration pack.  For most minor injuries on the trail, this pack will be more than suitable.  I think this would be a great kit to keep in your gym bag as well for after your runs when you might need to attend to some battle scars.

Another great product is the BlisterMedic.  It combines the tried and true protection of Moleskin and the advanced relief benefits of Glacier Gel, which stops the pain and starts the recovery process on contact.  The kit also comes with cleaning supplies to make sure you don’t have infection issues.  The kit comes in a bag that measures 4.25”x6.5”x0.5” and only weighs 1.9 ounces.  It comes with:

1 - GlacierGel 1.75”x3” Bandage
1 - GlacierGel 1”x1.25”Bandage
2 - Large Oval Moleskin – 1.75”x3”
4 - Medium Oval Moleskin – 1”x2”
4 - Medium Toe Moleskin – 1”x1.375”
6 - Small Toe Moleskin – 0.75”x1”
6 - Small Strip Moleskin – 0.5”x1.375”
6 - Antiseptic Towelette Pack
6 - Alcohol Wipe Pack

This is another great pack for trail running or your bag, especially on race day.  You never know when a hotspot or blister will occur and this would be great to have during your race or immediately after.  It is a great assortment and comes at a great price.

For those times when you are running on your lunch break or after a race, it is always nice to clean up a little.  I hate having that sweaty coating on my skin, especially if I have to drive an hour to get back home before I can jump in the shower.  Also, cleaning up a little is the nice thing to do prior to getting the free massages that are offered at some races.  Those poor massage therapist shouldn’t have to deal with your sweaty mess!  The travel sized wipes are 8”x5” and the regular sized wipes are 8”x8”.  I prefer the larger wipes because they are easier to use and can do a better job of cleaning.  The wipes come with a solution of vitamins, aloe, and moisturizers, which leave your skin clean and refreshed.  I have used baby wipes in the past and these wipes do a better job by far.  They are non-irritating and come in a resealable package.  Like the other two packs I tested, this would be great in your hydration pack on trail runs, or in your gym bag for after a race.

Pros:
Each product is well priced
Extremely durable packaging
Tons of value
Great assortment of supplies in a small package

I was extremely impressed by all three of the product that I tested and I think you will be too.  They are a great value and are small enough for you to take with you.  You can find Adventure Medical Kits products at REI, Eastern Mountain Sports, Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops, Sports Authority, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Dick’s Sports or online at the Adventure Medical Kits’ Website.
